The closest major Maya site to the lodge, reached by a hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan at San José Succotz. The name means Stone Woman, after a local legend of a figure seen on the steps at dawn.
El Castillo is the second tallest structure in Belize and you can climb it. From the top you look across the border into Guatemala.
Local tip
Go early. The ferry queues after ten and the plaza has almost no shade by midday.
