One of the most extraordinary archaeological sites anywhere in the Maya world, and the reason many people come to Cayo at all.
The day begins with a 45-minute jungle hike and three river crossings before you reach the cave mouth. Inside are ceremonial chambers still holding pottery where it was left, and the calcified remains known as the Crystal Maiden.
Groups are capped at six or eight and a licensed guide is required by law. Cameras are not permitted inside. It is physically demanding: expect to swim, wade and climb.
Local tip
Book at least a day ahead. Permits are limited and the site stops admitting new groups early in the afternoon.
