Belize holds a special place in my family's history, particularly because of my father's service in the British Army. Following a two-year jungle training stint, my father returned to the UK with a wife, a baby (that's me) and a feathered companion - a yellow headed Amazon parrot, we fondly named ... Polly.
Fifty years later, after a twenty-year hiatus, I revisited Belize, reconnected with family and rediscovered my roots.
During this return, I found myself creatively captivated by a piece of land, nestled along the Mopan River in Paslow Falls, near Bullet Tree Falls in the Cayo District of Belize.
When planning Libélula, we wanted to design a holiday home that balanced creativity and sustainability without breaking the bank. The usual options felt too extreme - either too fancy or too compromising. So, we aimed for a middle ground, crafting a holiday retreat that’s eco-friendly and budget-friendly.
We're building a holiday home that's eco-friendly, practical for daily life and a space for creativity, community and conservation.
Our aim is a home that's eco-friendly, practical and welcoming to all. To achieve this, we're collaborating with local architect Gustavo Guerra.
Summer 2023: acquired a stunning 0.55 acre waterfront plot featuring an array of fruit trees - avocado, soursop, coconut, lemons, limes and banana trees. The land transaction was expertly handled by Hector and Hector David Guerra from Valley West Realty.
Designed by Gustavo Guerra of Guerra Consulting Architects:
All air-conditioning units , refrigeration and electrical products and services procured from Guerra Electrical Engineering.
Chena's Team, from Clarissa Falls Resort, skillfully constructed the fence.
Structural Steel Fabrication & Installation: Liam Stewart from Cayo Steel Works Ltd.
Employed skilled local builders and trades.
The lodge will be crafted seamlessly, intertwining eco-friendly principles into its design, offering visitors a captivating experience that harmonises sustainability, comfort and the beauty of nature.
Artificial intelligence has undoubtedly transformed the way we live and work, but it cannot replace the power of human imagination.
Instead, by combining AI with our unique perspectives, we can unleash our creativity and achieve remarkable feats that were once unimaginable.
The short video depicting an eco-floating hotel is a testament to this notion. It was made with AI, my imagination and inspiration from Hayri Atak, Architectural Design Studio. It will inspire the future Libélula River Lodge and my ambitions for an eco-friendly retreat.
When we embrace the partnership between AI and human creativity, we recognise the incredible potential it holds for the future. By fusing innovation and imagination, we can dream big and work towards a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
